Hard to believe that it is almost the middle of November. Where are the days going? I finished up the garden winterizing and ready for alot more quilting time. Here is what I am working on.
Charm pack Newest project – I have had this charm pack forever. It is lovely and it is time to make something. I have been pondering the X Plus block. I have seen MANY quilts on-line that are beautiful. I really like the design but these fabrics are needing a more simple design. What if I just use the snowball block. Hmmm….

Hearts Hearts – I decided that I needed a small quilt to hang in my office cube for Valentine’s day. Once I found Cluck Cluck Sew’s tutorial ‘Simple Hearts’ I fell in love with the simplicity of the block. I know that I already have bunches of projects that I am working on but I am anxious to play. Love the colors. I am thinking that most of the hearts will be small but will add a few bigger ones. Aren’t these blocks adorable?

Uneven 9 patch Batik – Quarter Log Cabin. I have made some great progress on putting this quilt together. I have the blocks sewn into rows and now putting the rows together into pairs.

Honeycomb Honeycomb – the quilt top is almost done. I just need to finish putting the rows together. I wasn’t sure how I would like working with hexagons. There are a little fussy to sew together but the quilt is well worth the extra effort.

Leader/Enders 2015 Leaders & Enders – Getting close to finishing the 80 blocks for the quilt center. Only need 19 more blocks so I started cutting the squares and rectangles for the border.

Fall is in the air. The weather is cooler now with temps in the low 40’s in the morning and highs in the low 60’s. But at least the leaves haven’t started falling yet. Need to have a few warmer days so that I can get the garden ready for winter. Here is what I am working on.

Batik Uneven Nine Patch quilt top is done but when I posted about it I receive MANY lovely comments and some requests for more information about the block. In case you are interested, I posted the block tutorial yesterday and hope to add it to my NEW tutorial page soon.

Quarter log cabin Batik – ‘Quarter Log Cabins’. I have all 80 blocks made but the design wall has been busy lately with other projects. Probably okay since I haven’t finalized my design layout.

Houses Scrappy Summer 2015 #2 – ’20 Cottage Lane’. Quilt top is almost finished.

Hexagon Scrappy Summer 2015 #3 – ‘Honeycomb’ is made using hexagon blocks. Isn’t the pumpkin color perfect for a background? Photo is showing it a bit brighter than it is in real life.

Leader/Enders Leaders & Enders 2015 – I am starting to put the pieced units into blocks. Yahoo…progress.

How can it already be September? Where does the time go! I have been working a little on my WIP’s during the past week or so. Finally feels like I am making some progress.

Uneven 9 patch Batik ‘Uneven Nine Patch’ (I know – not a very creative name). Any suggestions for a name?
The quilt is coming along nicely. I have started sewing the 8″ blocks together into pairs. The layout is only a 6×8 grid so it shouldn’t take long before the quilt top is finished.

Quarter log cabin Batik – ‘Quarter Log Cabins’. I have 48 blocks done but decided that I wanted the quilt to be bigger. These blocks will finish 6″ square so if I go to a 8×10 grid the quilt center will finish 48″x60″. I was doing a search on quarter log cabin blocks to see if I could find some inspiration for a layout when I found a photo of MY blocks. Kinda strange to be looking at your own blocks on a google image search.

Houses Scrappy Summer 2015 #2 – Houses. I am thinking that the quilt will be smaller (more of wallhanging size) but who knows until it is done. The blocks in the photos were oversized a little since I am wasn’t sure what size I wanted. I am leaning toward a finished 5″x 7″. Here is my first quilt for Scrappy Summer 2015 – Petals using the same collection of fabrics.

Leader Enders 2015 I think I have decided on the layout only to discover that I will need more units (bunches of them). What do you think of adding a border made up of dark squares and rectangles? I like the look but maybe it needs a bit of red for a skinny inner border.

Since the last Design Wall Wednesday post, I have finished my ‘Americana’ quilt top and started another project.

Solids I have worked with these squares for awhile and came up with several layouts but none of them made me happy. SO – the blocks will go into a box until I find some inspiration.

Tic Tac Toe I am crossing my fingers that I get a chance to sew the borders on this weekend.

Scrappy Summer 2015 fabrics The photo shows some of the fabrics for my Scrappy Summer 2015. I loved what I did last year…okay maybe love isn’t the correct word for all of the cutting, starching and pressing I did on the 66 fat quarters I used. My idea was to work with one fabric collection and make several smaller quilts. Check out ‘My Quilts’ page to find the five quilts I made and here is a link to the first post.

When I started pondering doing a ‘Scrappy Summer 2015’ I looked thru my stash trying to decide what group of fabrics I wanted to use. I came across my Kaffee Fassett and Kaffee-like fabric collections. You would categorize them into two groups – stripes/plaids and big florals. The plaids and stripes really didn’t play well with the florals so those went back on the shelf. I was surprised how many fabrics I had since I am normally not a big print fan. I find them hard to work with because you aren’t quite sure what you get when you cut up them up. For my first design idea, I made myself a couple of rules. 1) no fussy cutting the squares and 2) just let go and not worry about the big prints (easier said then done).

Here is what I am working on.

Espresso Espresso – I now have seven sections with four diagonal rows per section. I need to spend some serious quality time putting the sections together to finish the quilt top. Why the rush you ask…well, the next quilt project needs to get on the design wall so that I can make some decisions.

Americana Americana – here are some of the border units. Still have bunches more to make. Using my ‘Companion Angle’ ruler by Darlene Zimmerman made it bit easier to sew these triangles together. It helped me match up the points of the triangles with the notched corner. Less worrying about dog ears and offsetting the triangle points.

Bright Colors I had prepared and cut the black/white/grey striped fabric that I wanted to use for the block sashing and started to sew them on when I realized that they where too big. Bummer. With some help from my best friend and quilting buddy, we decided on a smaller size. You wouldn’t think that a 1/2″ would make that big of a difference but it did.

Last week we had some beautiful warm days in the 70’s now the high is expected to be in the 40 and 50’s – what can I say – it’s Minnesota.

Here is what is currently on my design wall:

Espresso Espresso – all of the blocks are sewn into diagonal rows. Let me tell you that sewing on the diagonal makes for some long seams. Next step will be to start sewing them into pairs. I am so excited about this quilt – it is turning out great!

Red, white and blue Red, White and Blue – after looking at probably 2,000 ideas I finally decided on one. Okay, maybe not 2,000 maybe only 20 but still… you know how it is. After working on my initial idea I decided it just wasn’t right so I kept trying. I took the strip sets I had made and cut them diagonally both directions and made some of them into half square triangles.

Black & White Tic Tac Toe Here are some of the fabrics I will be using for my next project. It needs a pair of companion black and white fabric and lots of bright colors. In the photo I am auditioning three different fabrics combos to see which one works the best. I guess you can tell which set I decided on.

I was out in the garden this weekend and noticed that I have some columbine, irises and day lilies starting to grow. They are a bit early for Minnesota spring. Hopefully, we won’t have too many more really cold days. We have been known to have snow in May.

    Updates on my WIP Quilts:

    Ribbon Candy in rows

If you need a quick and easy quilt to make, this would be one to consider.
The blocks have been sewn into rows waiting for me to find some time to sew them together.

    Espresso units ESPRESSO
I have been spending time putting together the pieces for each section of the blocks. The hourglass blocks are really the corners of the original block. If you click on the photo you will be able to see where I have added the two side pieces to the center square. Ignore all the labels – just my way to keeping everything in order for when I sew the units together on the diagonal.

    New project NEW PROJECT
I originally start working on this design back in August 2014. I pondered many many layouts and design ideas but none of them seem to be right. I dragged out the box a couple of weeks ago and have made about a dozen strips sets. They are currently sitting in a pile waiting for inspiration.

I am trying a new layout for my ‘Design Wall Wednesday’ posts. Let me know what you think.
