Americana

June 2, 2015 in QUILTING

Well, I finally got one of my projects completed. There were too many going so I decided I had to stop and concentrate on one. The weather was helpful – it rained on and off for a couple of days which kept me out of the garden and in the studio. ‘Americana’ finished at 43″ x 55″. After agonizing over the border design/size etc for ages, I decided that my pieced triangle border was a distraction. I really like how the simplicity of a plain background frame shows off the center.

But then what do I do with the four border sections I didn’t use. Do I take them apart or sew the strips together for a funky wall hanging or table runner? Hmmm… something to ponder.

Design Wall Wednesday 5.13.2015

Not much of progress in the studio this week on the WIP’s BUT I did start a couple more. I know, I should finish one before starting another one but when you are stuck and unsure what to do it is better to work on something else.

Bright Colors The blocks are sewn together into rows but I haven’t figured out what to do for borders. Do I add smaller four patch blocks on point using the colors? Do I do an insert strip piece? Decisions..decisions.

Americana The quilt center is done and looks great – very patriotic but I still need to figure out size of inner border. The pieced outer borders (triangles) are done so now I need to decide on the size of the inner border so that all of the pieces fit together.

Teal & Brown Teal and Brown Since I can’t figure out borders for the other quilts I decided to pull together some fabrics. Aren’t they great? Love the colors. I have made a bunch of block in a block units and trying to figure out layout.

Leaders & Enders 2015 Here is a sample of the recycled shirts I will be using for my 2015 Leaders & Enders quilt. Actually, I have 35 shirts (so far) ranging from light to dark in blue, green and brown. If you haven’t heard about ‘Leaders and Enders’ check out my previous post.

Design Wall Wednesday – 4.22.2015

Here is what I am working on.

Espresso Espresso – I now have seven sections with four diagonal rows per section. I need to spend some serious quality time putting the sections together to finish the quilt top. Why the rush you ask…well, the next quilt project needs to get on the design wall so that I can make some decisions.

Americana Americana – here are some of the border units. Still have bunches more to make. Using my ‘Companion Angle’ ruler by Darlene Zimmerman made it bit easier to sew these triangles together. It helped me match up the points of the triangles with the notched corner. Less worrying about dog ears and offsetting the triangle points.

Bright Colors I had prepared and cut the black/white/grey striped fabric that I wanted to use for the block sashing and started to sew them on when I realized that they where too big. Bummer. With some help from my best friend and quilting buddy, we decided on a smaller size. You wouldn’t think that a 1/2″ would make that big of a difference but it did.

Last week we had some beautiful warm days in the 70’s now the high is expected to be in the 40 and 50’s – what can I say – it’s Minnesota.
