There are three of us that have been challenging each other to use some of our quilt books. One person gets to select the book and the pattern and we all have to make our own version. Jane selected the ‘Tulip Garden’ pattern from Jan Bode Smiley’s quilt book called ‘Focus on Batiks’. Sorry for the crooked photo but I wasn’t able to find a photo on-line and had to scan the book page on my printer.
For my variation on this challenge, I made the blocks smaller, changed the piecing a little bit (using trapezoids instead of rectangles and half-square triangles), and changed the orientation of the blocks to make the quilt tall instead of wide. I met TWO challenges by using large rick-rack sewn between the border and binding, and I will be donating the quilt to the President’s Challenge at the Minnesota Quilt Show, which is asking for baby quilts with special edge techniques.
“Sunrise” finishes 43” x 60” just the right size. Is it too obviously that I got to choose which quilt design we used for this book challenge. The batik fabrics were already in my stash. The two changes I made to the design were the layout and size of the block.
I made a small 38″ square wall hanging using black, white and pink with a touch of yellow. The floral border brings it all together. Hard to believe that it is the same block. I oversized the block and turned them so that the top of the flower is in the center.
